Expertise includes process modelling, including computational fluids dynamics, microbiology, and uncertainty and risk management. He is recognised particularly for process technology development in the area of biosolids and energy biotechnology, and as lead developer of industry standard models for anaerobic digestion (ADM1) and physicochemical modelling (PCM).
Damien has taught major undergraduate chemical engineering courses, including capstone design, statistics, and process modelling for over 20 years at UQ, and co-led development of the Urban Water engineering postgraduate courses at ACWEB, including the new microcredential in water treatment. He is the current director of IWES, has taught IWES for 20 years, and is highly motivated towards strategies for life long learning (including his own).
