Dr. Bernardino Virdis is a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Centre for Water and Environmental Biotechnology (ACWEB) at The University of Queensland, where he leads research in environmental biotechnology, bioprocess engineering, and environmental electrochemistry. His academic background includes a Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering and a PhD in Chemical Engineering (2010).
Dr Virdis’ research focuses on developing sustainable, scalable solutions for waste treatment and resource recovery, with direct applications across municipal and industrial sectors. His work bridges fundamental science and practical implementation, delivering real-world impact in sustainable waste management. His research is published in major outlets in environmental science and technology, and electrochemistry, including ISME Journal, Energy and Environmental Science, Water Research, Environmental Science & Technology, Nature Communications, Journal of Power Sources.
Dr Virdis has over a decade of academic teaching experience, demonstrating excellence across undergraduate and postgraduate courses with excellent student evaluations and recognition. Beyond traditional university teaching, he delivers specialised technical courses and workshops to industry professionals.
