This 12hr course course addresses the essentials of wastewater chemistry, including:
- The forgotten basics, such as the periodic table of elements, molecules and ions;
- The importance of chemical conditions such as pH, alkalinity, saturation extents and redox; and
- Chemical reagents, how they work.
The course content (day 1) is reinforced by a series of application area workshops (day 2) including control of turbidity, sewer corrosion, odour control, inorganic scale prevention, nutrient recovery and biofouling. The course also discusses operational set-points for chemical dosing. The course does NOT deal with biochemistry.
This highly interactive course uses a series of workshop based exercises to introduce basic chemistry concepts. The course will use spread-sheeting extensively, and participants should bring a laptop computer (with Microsoft Excel installed). Macros should be enabled.
DAY 1 Chemistry Basics
- Water and wastewater chemical reaction types, equilibrium and kinetics
- Introduction to chemical calculation tools – Calculating in Excel and using PhreeqC
- Gas exchange – solubility, mass transfer, design and operation
- Minerals precipitation – solubility, rates
DAY 2 Operation and Analysis
- pH control in wastewater and water processes
- Estimating and controlling inorganic scale formation
- Nutrient recovery using physico-chemical processes
- Sewer sulfide control with chemicals
- Disinfection in water treatment, dosing and chemicals
